VILNIUS, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Lithuanian leaders said on Tuesday the commissioner-designate of the next European Commission from Lithuania was nominated to a portfolio in one of the priority areas.
Lithuanian Minister for Economy and Innovation Virginijus Sinkevicius is proposed to become the European Commissioner responsible for Environment and Oceans, according to nominations made public by President-elect of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
"The Lithuanian candidate was offered one of the priority areas in the new European Commission," Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said in a statement emphasizing that responsibilities given to Sinkevicius show "a huge trust in a young politician".
Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said Sinkevicius was nominated to have "a really important and significant portfolio".
"Climate change and digitalization will be one of the priorities of the European Commission for the upcoming five years," said Skvernelis in a statement.
Sinkevicius himself has described the nomination as "a very responsible portfolio".
"This is an economy area -- the green and the blue economy. Also, circular economy will be one of the key areas," Sinkevicius described priorities in his nominated portfolio to the Lithuanian national broadcaster LRT.
Sinkevicius and other commissioners-designate will undergo hearings in the respective committees in the European Parliament before their approval. Enditem
