TEGUCIGALPA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rains led to the collapse of the Western Highway in Honduras, impeding access to customs posts in neighboring Guatemala and El Salvador, the emergency management agency Honduran Permanent Contingency Commission (Copeco) said on Tuesday.

Since Monday night, a major crater has made Highway CA-4 impassable in the border town of Cucuyagua, stranding scores of cargo trucks.

Trucks carrying raw materials and merchandise use the highway to transport goods between Honduras and its neighbors to the north, and from western Honduras to northern San Pedro Sula, the country's second largest city and its industrial center.

"The crater, which spans both lanes of the highway, has stranded scores of people trying to travel between (the western departments of) Copan and Ocotepeque," the daily La Prensa said on its website.

The crater was estimated to measure 30 meters in length, the daily said, adding Copeco crews were working to restore the transit. Enditem
