GAZA, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Israeli war jets carried out early on Wednesday intensive airstrikes on militants' facilities and posts in the Gaza Strip in response to rockets fired into Israel on Tuesday night, security officials said.

In the reprisal strikes that targeted several posts belonging to the Islamic Hamas Movement, Israeli warplanes and pilotless drones hovered over the Gaza Strip.

Residents in central Gaza Strip said several explosions were heard in the area and that a military post that belongs to an armed wing of Hamas was attacked by missiles west of Deir el-Ballah town. No injuries were reported.

The airstrikes were launched hours after four rockets were fired from the coastal enclave of Gaza and landed near the Israeli towns of Ashdod and Ashkelon.

One of the rockets fell on Ashdod where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was giving a speech as part of his campaign for the parliamentary elections that will be held on Sept. 17. No one claimed responsibility for Tuesday's rocket attacks.

Tension flared after Netanyahu announced in a news conference earlier Tuesday that he would impose Israel's sovereignty on the Jordan Valley if re-elected as prime minister. Enditem
