MOSCOW, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Members of the Russian Parliament investigating interference in the country's internal affairs may form a joint contact group with Facebook and Google, a statement by the Federation Council upper house said Thursday.

"Large Internet companies have sent signals to form a contact group with the participation of members of the commission, which would allow, based on previous experience, international law and Russian law, to prevent in the future any opportunities for illegal use of the Internet platforms of these companies in Russia," the statement quoted lawmaker Andrei Klimov as saying.

Klimov heads the upper house's Provisional Commission for the Protection of State Sovereignty and the Prevention of Intervention in the Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Russia's telecommunications watchdog Roskomnadzor said on Sunday that it had established facts of the distribution of political advertising on Google, Facebook and YouTube on Russia's voting day of local elections and qualified it as "interference in the sovereign affairs."

In Russia, no political advertising is allowed on the national election day on Sept. 8 and on the preceding day, so Roskomnadzor issued a relevant warning to Google and Facebook earlier on Friday.

The upper house's statement quoted Klimov as saying after a meeting of the commission's working group that "a number of Internet sites were used to place political advertisements in order to somehow influence the will of voters."

The part of the meeting held behind closed doors was devoted to elaborate proposals of the working group to be submitted to the meeting of the commission to be held in the end of September - beginning of October, the statement said. Enditem
