ATHENS, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- A 58-year-old man lost his life in a wildfire in western Greece, Greek national news agency AMNA reported on Friday.

The man collapsed during firefighting efforts to extinguish a blaze raging at a forested zone in the western Peloponnese peninsula and was transferred to a local medical center.

According to initial information, he faced respiratory problems due to heavy smoke.

Dozens of firefighters assisted by water-dropping aircraft are still battling the flames which do not threaten residential areas, according to the Fire Brigade.

Another front that broke out at the coastal resort of Saronida near Athens on Friday has also been put under control, according to the Fire Brigade which ordered the evacuation of a few houses as a precautionary measure.

No injuries have been reported, but only minor damages to a few homes.

Greece suffers from destructive wildfire every year, mainly during the summer period, which is mostly linked to heatwaves and arson.

A blaze that swept through another seaside resort near Athens in July 2018 resulted in 102 deaths. Enditem
