TRIPOLI, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army on Sunday announced making progress against the rival UN-backed government in the capital Tripoli, as the armed conflict between the two parties continues.

"The military units of the armed forces have made great progress in all axes, after all units and factions launched an intensive attack on the positions of the forces of the Government of National Accord," the eastern-based army's information office said in a statement.

The statement said that military vehicles and weaponry of the UN-backed government's forces have been destroyed, and a number of their fighters were captured.

However, the UN-backed government's forces said that a number of the eastern-based army soldiers have been captured in the attack.

The UN-backed government has been engaged in a deadly armed conflict in and around Tripoli since early April against the eastern-based army, which is trying to take over the city and overthrow the UN-backed government.

The eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, is allied with the eastern-based government, as the North African nation is politically divided between eastern and western governments.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political instability ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Enditem
