Cuevas steers Uruguay to Davis Cup qualifiers

MONTEVIDEO, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Pablo Cuevas led Uruguay to the 2020 Davis Cup qualifying round on Sunday by defeating Jose Hernandez-Fernandez of Dominican Republic 7-5, 6-0 in their decisive reverse singles duel here.

World No. 44 Cuevas wrapped up the match in one hour and 15 minutes on the outdoor clay at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo as the hosts clinched the tie 3-1.

Cuevas won his opening singles match against Roberto Cid 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday and teamed with his brother Martin to overcome Victor Estrella and Nick Hardt 6-4 6-3 in the doubles.

Uruguay are now just one victory away from earning a berth in the inaugural Davis Cup finals in Madrid in November 2020.

Other teams to progress to February's qualifying round on Sunday were the Czech Republic, Ecuador and South Africa with victories over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Venezuela and China, respectively. Enditem
