NEW DELHI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- As many as 10 persons were killed and one was injured in India's northern state of Haryana when the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a truck, local police confirmed to Xinhua on Wednesday.

The dead, aged between 18 to 22, were on their way back from an army recruitment rally when the accident occurred.

The accident took place near a village on Jind-Hisar road in Haryana's Jind district on Tuesday night, said the local police.

Local top cop Kaptan Singh said that all 10 people died at the accident site, and the injured was admitted to a nearby hospital.

Around 150,000 people die in road accidents in the country every year. This month the Motor Vehicles Act was amended and hefty fines have been imposed on those found guilty of violating traffic laws, like rash driving, not wearing helmets while riding a two-wheelers or not putting seat belts while driving a four-wheeler.

Most of the fatal accidents occur during night hours due to drunk driving or dozing off at the wheel, official figures suggest. Enditem
