ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A traffic accident in Ethiopia's northern Amhara regional state has left 10 people dead, an Ethiopian official said on Saturday.

Mohammed Ali, Chief Traffic Police Inspector, Gile Tumuga locality, Amhara regional state, said the traffic accident happened on early Saturday morning when a transport minibus travelling on the road collided with a freight truck travelling on the opposite side of the road leaving 10 people dead, reported state media outlet Ethiopia News Agency.

Ali said 14 other people who received heavy injuries are currently being treated in a nearby medical institutions.

"Police have put the driver of the freight truck under custody pending a completion of investigation into the possible causes of the deadly traffic accident," said Ali.

Police is currently looking for the whereabouts of the transport minibus driver.

Ali further called on drivers and passengers alike to avoid late night travel, which he said are a leading cause of traffic accidents.

Although Ethiopia has one of the lowest per capita car ownership rates in the world, deadly traffic accidents are fairly common, with the blame put on bad roads, reckless driving, a flawed driving license issuance system, and lax enforcement of safety rules. Enditem
