TUNIS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- As part of the Tunisian-American military cooperation, the first part of the coastal surveillance system carried out by the American side came into operation on Thursday at the naval base of Kelibia in Nabeul province.

According to a statement by the defense ministry, the system is essentially made up of a series of monitoring stations along the shoreline, equipped with state-of-the-art detection devices.

"The Chief of Staff of the Tunisian Navy authorized the activation of the first phase of the coastal surveillance system in the presence of the U.S. ambassador to Tunisia, director of International Programs of the U.S. Navy and senior officers of Tunisian Navy," said the statement.

On May 16, 2019, Commander of the U.S. Africa Command Thomas D. Waldhauser paid an official visit to Tunisia to examine with Tunisian Defense Minister Abdelkarim Zbidi various aspects of military cooperation and development between the two countries.

The meeting focused on border security, fighting terrorism and organized crime, as well as strengthening the operational capabilities of the Tunisian military, particularly in the fields of training and intelligence. Enditem
