Libya's UN-backed gov't says shelling kills 2 civilians in Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Forces of Libya's UN-backed government announced on Thursday that two civilians have been killed by indiscriminate shelling in southern Tripoli.
"A woman and her daughter were killed when their home was hit by shelling carried out by Haftar's militias (eastern-based army) in Wali al-Ahd street (southern Tripoli)," the UN-backed government's forces said in a statement.
The statement also said that 8 other civilians were injured by the shelling.
The eastern-based army on Wednesday announced intensifying strikes against the rival UN-backed government's forces in southern Tripoli.
According to local residents, heavy fire and explosions could be heard loudly in southern Tripoli.
Tripoli, home to nearly 2 million people, has been witnessing deadly armed conflict for six months between the UN-backed government and the rival eastern-based army, which is trying to take over the city and overthrow the UN-backed government.
Thousands of lives were lost in the fighting, and almost 120,000 civilians fled their homes away from the violence.
The army, led by Khalifa Haftar, is allied with the eastern-based government, as the North African nation is politically divided between eastern and western governments. Enditem
