ABUJA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Recurring floods in Nigeria's northwest region have destroyed over 3,000 farmlands causing adverse effects on income levels of local farmers, an association of Nigerian farmers said on Friday.

Up to 11 areas were affected by the flood, which was triggered by incessant rain, in the northwestern Nigerian state of Jigawa, said Yakubu Dolon-Zugo, chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria.

Guinea corn, sesame, maize, cotton, and rice were among the farm produce destroyed by the devastating flood, Dolon-Zugo said.

"About 70 to 80 percent of our farm produce was destroyed by the recurring flood over a period of two months," he said, adding the local farmers were desperately in need of support because the losses they recorded will have an adverse effect on their income levels.

This year, Nigeria's 36 states and the federal capital territory, Abuja, would witness different levels of flooding, the local hydrological body earlier predicted. Enditem
