TUNIS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia's Islamist party "Ennahdha" (Renaissance) ranked the first in Tunisian parliamentary elections by winning 17.5 percent of the vote, said a survey released by the Tunisian company Sigma Conseil on Sunday.

While the Heart of Tunisia party came the second with 15.6 percent of the vote.

This party managed to win the second place in the parliamentary elections, despite its leader Nabil Karoui in prison since Aug. 23 for suspicion of money laundering and tax evasion.

Earlier, Karoui, a candidate in the second round of the presidential election, had anticipated the official announcement of the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections by announcing that his party won the first place.

"Voters trusted us but they did not give us a comfortable asset that would allow us to form a government as we had envisioned," said Karoui in prison.

"We would face a heavy responsibility and a difficult test for our party and the democratic parties," the presidential candidate added.

The strong man of Ennahdha party Rached Ghannouchi believed that the victory of his party "wasn't easy," stressing "the need for partners to form the next government."

"We have proved through all the available data that we have achieved an undeniable victory," said the Ennahdha leader during a press conference held late on Sunday evening.

President of the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) Nabil Bafoun confirmed at a press conference that the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections would be announced on Oct. 9.

He explained that the law "gives the ISIE three days to announce the results."

However, the same regulation does not prevent opinion institutions from providing certain results, including exit polls.

Among these institutions is Sigma Councils, which published estimates showing the victory of Ennahdha that would have 40 seats in the parliament.

According to the survey, the Heart of Tunisia party would occupy 33 seats. Enditem
