LISBON, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- A transatlantic submarine cable will be installed to link Sines, Portugal, to Fortaleza, Brazil, with an investment of 170 million euros (186 million U.S. dollars), an official statement said on Monday.

The submarine cable will pass through Cape Verde and the island of Madeira, with a data transmission capacity of 73 terabits per second, according to the municipality of Sines, a southern port city of Portugal.

The first data transmission is scheduled for late 2020.

The infrastructure, called Ellalink, will be implemented under the BELLA project (Building European Link to Latin America), which brings together the European and South American science networks, being funded by the European Commission and private funds, according to the statement.

"The installation of the EllaLink cable will enable the development of a new digital innovation hub in Sines," mayor of Sines Nuno Mascaren has said.

According to the mayor, the consortium responsible for the installation of the cable, the EllaLink consortium, will build in Sines the cable reception infrastructure and the data processing station. Enditem
