ISLAMABAD, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake of 5.2-magnitude jolted parts of northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday afternoon, local Met office said.

The Pakistan meteorological office said on its website that the epicenter of the quake which struck at 3:44 p.m. local time was determined in the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan, with a focal depth of 180 km.

No loss of life or property has been immediately reported, but the quake created panic among the people who rushed out of buildings and on to the streets.

Local Urdu TV channel Geo reported that the tremors were felt in Peshawar, Swat, Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera and other cities of the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Pakistan has a worse history of serious earthquakes as it is located at one of the most earthquake prone areas with high vulnerability to earthquakes.

Earlier on Sept. 24, a 5.8-magnitude quake hit parts of the country, leaving at least 40 dead and over 500 injured, according to government officials. Enditem
