Cambodia arrests 15,144 drug-related suspects in 9 months

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian authorities had arrested 15,144 drug-related suspects in 7,121 cases during the first nine months of 2019, according to an Interior Ministry's anti-drug department report on Wednesday.

Some 8,177 suspects are involved in drug trafficking and 6,967 are related to drug use, the report said, adding that 324 of them are foreigners in 12 nationalities.

The report said more than 405 kilograms of drugs such as heroin, cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine pills, and ketamine, and 202 kilograms of dry marijuana, were seized from the suspects during the January-September period this year.

Also, the authorities confiscated 51 cars, 1,769 motorcycles, 4,674 cell phones, 264 scales, nine rifles and six pistols from them, the report added.

In the entirety of 2018, the Southeast Asian country caught 16,232 suspects in 8,018 drug-related cases and seized more than 533 kilograms of illicit drugs.

Cambodia has no death sentence for illicit drug traffickers. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drug could be jailed for life. Enditem
