CAIRO, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Egypt strongly condemned what it described as "the Turkish aggression" in the Syrian territories and called for an urgent meeting of the Arab League (AL) over the issue, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

Egypt described Ankara's operation launched on Wednesday in northern Syria as "an unacceptable blatant violation of the sovereignty of a fellow Arab state and a misuse of the current conditions and developments that Syria is going through."

It added that the Turkish offensive "violates the rules of the international law" and "poses a threat to world security and peace."

In this regard, Egypt called for holding an emergency meeting of the AL council "to discuss these developments and the means of maintaining Syria's sovereignty, the unity of its people and the integrity of its territories."

Egypt's statement came hours after Turkey launched a military offensive dubbed "Operation Peace Spring" against Kurdish forces in northern Syria bordering southern Turkey, which Ankara deems terrorists. Enditem
