BAGHDAD, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi parliament on Thursday voted to name two of the five ministers presented by Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi as part of a cabinet reshuffle within promised reforms in response to protests.

The state-run al-Iraqiya channel said that in a session chaired by Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and attended by 220 lawmakers, the parliament voted for Suha Khalil as Minister of Education and Jaafar Sadiq Allawi as new Health Minister.

Lawmakers also voted to accept the resignation of former Health Minister Alaa al-Alwan, who submitted his resignation a month ago to Abdul Mahdi over what he said political pressures hindering his work.

Last week, thousands of Iraqis took to streets of Baghdad and other Iraqi provinces to voice their anger amid deteriorating living standards and absence of improvement in public services.

However, violence accompanied the nationwide unrest, leaving over 100 people dead and over 6,000 wounded, according to a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior. Enditem
