DAMASCUS -- At least 30 civilians have so far been killed in northern Syria since Turkey unleashed a military offensive against the Kurdish militias on Wednesday, a war monitor reported Saturday.

The civilians were killed as a result of the "random" Turkish shelling on several areas in northern Syria, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. (Syria-Turkey)

TOKYO -- Two people have died, three went missing and at least 70 injured after Typhoon Hagibis made landfall on the Izu Peninsula on Japan's main island at 7:00 p.m. Saturday local time, bringing heavy downpours and winds, authorities said.

A man in his 50s was found dead in an overturned car in Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo, possibly hit by a tornado formed during the course of Typhoon Hagibis, which also ravaged several houses, local government officials said, while the police said a man died after being hit by a landslide in Gunma prefecture. CAIRO -- Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit described on Saturday the ongoing Turkish military operation in northern Syria as a "military invasion."

MEXICO CITY -- Two people have died and one remains missing after a small boat filled with migrants from Cameroon sank off Mexico's southern Pacific coast on Friday, authorities said.
