HARARE, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The following are the news highlights in Zimbabwe's major media outlets on Monday.

-- The Zimbabwe government has assigned five more contractors to undertake roadworks on the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu highway and released 150 million U.S. dollars for the project.

Work is expected to start soon. (The Herald)

-- The government will on Monday assess the compliance of striking junior doctors to the Labor Court ruling handed down last Friday compelling them to report for work within 48 hours.

This followed an application by the Health Services Board (HSB) to the Labor Court to show cause why the collective job action should not be terminated. (The Herald)

-- President Emmerson Mnangagwa's government has been pushed against the wall by its restive workers who have tabled a new salary demand of at least 475 U.S. dollars or its equivalence of 7, 267 Zimbabwe dollars at the prevailing interbank rate for the least paid civil servant, as inflation continues to gnaw into the local currency and worker's earnings.

The salary issue it at the center of Monday's crunch meeting between government and workers' representative body, Apex Council, with workers' leaders vowing Sunday that they would not settle for anything less than US dollar-benchmarked salaries. (Newsday) Enditem
