NAIROBI, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Kenya plans to develop video standards in order to boost the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the country's development blueprint, the Vision 2030, an official said on Monday.
Ken Wathome, chairman of the National Standards Council told journalists in Nairobi that approximately 90 percent of Kenyans have access to the internet with the majority being connected via their mobile devices.
"We shall develop standards because it will present great opportunities to leverage technology, particularly, video technology to fast track delivery of services to people and communities that need them the most," Wathome said during the 2019 world standards day celebrations.
National Standards Council is also the board of directors of the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
Wathome noted that the country's economic potential can be multiplied with the use of video compression standards that make it possible for individuals to record videos in such a way that they take up less memory space and less bandwidth.
"As such, video compression standards have the potential to improve service delivery in almost every sector and make a difference in the people's lives ranging from education, healthcare, agriculture, security, governance among others," he added.
Wathome revealed that in a fast-paced world, Kenya can not underestimate the role of standards given that they are important tools of trade, and can help in promoting innovation and giving entrepreneurs a competitive advantage. Enditem
