JERUSALEM, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked on Tuesday Russian President Vladimir Putin to pardon a young Israeli woman imprisoned for drugs found in her luggage during transit through a Moscow airport.

Israeli Prime Minister's Office said in a statement it has delivered to Moscow a request on behalf of Netanyahu and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin to pardon Naama Issachar, who was sentenced last week for 7.5 years in prison for "drug trafficking."

The request asks Putin "to pardon Naama Issachar and repatriate her back to Israel," the statement read.

Issachar, 26, was arrested in April in Moscow's international airport after 9.6 grams of marijuana were found in her suitcase as she transited through Russia from India to Israel.

Israeli officials suggested that Moscow is using the case to push for the release of a Russian hacker jailed in Israel, according to local media.

Her arrest sparked an unusual public campaign, with tens of thousands of Israelis signing petitions for her release and major news channels closely monitoring developments of the case. Enditem
