UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy on Tuesday called on the international community to help Haiti in maintaining stability, boosting economic growth, and improving people's livelihood.

Speaking at the Security Council's last debate on the UN Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH), Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, urged the countries with important influence on Haiti to increase their attention to the political, economic, and humanitarian situations in the country.

The mandate of the MINUJUSTH expired Tuesday, and it marks the end of more than 15 years of UN peacekeeping in Haiti.

Over the past 15 years, the UN peacekeepers have made important contributions to the peace and stability of Haiti, said Wu, adding that eight Chinese peacekeepers died in the line of duty in Haiti, making the ultimate sacrifice for the peace of the country.

Wu said, "It pains us to see that the country's political crisis has escalated again lately."

In Haiti, protests have increased in intensity in the last few weeks. Seventeen people have been reported dead and over 200 injured in these most recent demonstrations. On Oct. 11, demonstrations became riots as protestors fought with police and attempted to break a barricade near the presidential residence.

China calls upon the Haitian authorities to be committed to resolving differences properly through consultation, strengthen the rule of law and its own development capacity, and resolve the current political crisis as soon as possible, the Chinese envoy said.

Noting "the road to achieving stability in developing Haiti would be long and hard," Wu said China hopes the Haitian government will put the interests of the people at the top of its agenda, embark on a path of self-reliance, and effectively assume its responsibility for maintaining national security and stability and promoting economic and social development.

To replace MINUJUSTH, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), a special political mission, will be established on Oct. 16. Enditem
