ACCRA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's quest to reduce poverty should be backed by stronger efforts to protect the incomes of farmers, a senior official from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said here on Wednesday.

These efforts were necessary because farmers were some of the poorest people in the world, Jocelyn Brown Hall, the regional representative of the FAO for Africa, told Xinhua during the flag-raising ceremony to mark the 2019 World Food Day .

"As we know from research and the UN, poverty reduction and zero hunger are inextricably linked. You can not have zero hunger if you still have extreme poverty. Focusing on the rural economy is necessary to ensure that farmers receive more money for their efforts," the official said.

"We need to increase their productivity, and ensure that not just one type of farmers get support," she added. Enditem
