LUSAKA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Thursday assured refugees residing in the country that they will continue living wholesome lives without any form of discrimination.

The Zambian leader said the government will continue receiving refugees but underscored the importance of peace in neighboring countries to reduce the number of refugees.

Speaking when visiting UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi paid a courtesy call on him, the Zambian leader further acknowledged the assistance of the UN refugee agency to Zambia in taking care of the refugees.

He, however, said more assistance was required in ensuring that refugees have proper social amenities just like local citizens.

"We will continue giving a wholesome life to refugees without discrimination and without leaving anyone behind," he said.

The Zambian leader welcomed the visit of the UNHCR chief, saying it will help to acquaint him with the challenges in the refugee program in Zambia.

On his part, the visiting UNHCR chief assured Zambia of continued support.

He said it was gratifying that Zambia has continued to provide shelter to refugees, especially those from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

"We appreciate what you are doing and we are ready to help you. We are ready to mobilize resources and work with you," he said.

He also welcomed the fact that Zambia was embracing the Global Compact on Refugees as a progressive and landmark document which will contribute to ensuring sustainable solutions for refugees, former refugees and host communities in a holistic manner.

The UNHCR chief is on a tour of some countries in southern Africa, with his visit expected to end in South Africa.

Zambia currently hosts 84,553 refugees and others of concern. Enditem
