Philadelphia Orchestra to deepen people-to-people exchanges with China through residency activities

NEW YORK, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- A string quartet of The Philadelphia Orchestra will travel to China next month for residency activities to further the orchestra's commitment to people-to-people exchanges through music.
The activities will mainly include side-by-side chamber concerts, coaching sessions and master classes in both Shanghai and Beijing, according to the orchestra's latest statement.
From Nov. 11 through 13, musicians of the renowned U.S. orchestra will join members of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in collaborative activities at ShanghaiTech University as part of a three-year strategic partnership designed to provide world-class musical performances on campus and to engage students in musical activities that inspire innovation and creativity.
The group will then travel to Beijing and engage in activities at the China Conservatory of Music from Nov. 14 through 16.
"In continuing our tradition of pursuing deep people-to-people engagement abroad, we look forward to working with our partners at ShanghaiTech and the China Conservatory of Music," President and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra Matias Tarnopolsky told Xinhua on Thursday.
"This powerful example of cultural exchange reminds us vividly of how music connects us all," he added.
Founded in 1900, The Philadelphia Orchestra is renowned for a long and distinguished history of touring the world.
In 1973, the orchestra pioneered cultural exchanges with China at the request of then U.S. President Richard Nixon, becoming the first American orchestra to make a tour to the People's Republic of China.
Since then, its collaboration with China has flourished, representing a bridge for cultural, educational and people-to-people exchanges.
The orchestra enjoys a long-standing partnership with the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. In addition, it has worked with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra since 2016 in advancing cultural exchanges between the United States and China.
In May, it wrapped up its 12th tour to China, which was also aimed at marking the four-decade milestone in U.S.-China diplomatic relations. Enditem
