BISHKEK, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The poverty rate in Kyrgyzstan stands at 20 percent, said a report released by the World Bank ahead of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Thursday.

The poverty rate in Kyrgyzstan has dropped from 70 percent in 2002 to 20 percent in 2009, which has been maintained through to today, the bank said in its new Poverty Outlooks for Central Asian countries.

Many of the poverty hotspots are in rural areas that lack close integration with urban growth centers, and poverty rates in the most remote districts are above 40 percent, the document said.

Data of the National Statistics Committee of Kyrgyzstan showed that a total of 1.429 million people live below the poverty line, 35,000 of whom live below the extreme poverty line.

The total population of Kyrgyzstan is about 6.4 million. Enditem
