Number of active U.S. drilling rigs falls this week

HOUSTON, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The number of active drilling rigs in the United States decreased by five 851 this week, down 216 rigs year-on-year, according to the weekly data released by Baker Hughes on Friday.

According to the Houston-based oilfield services company, these active drilling rigs included 713 oil rigs operating in the U.S. oil fields, up one from the previous week; 137 gas drilling rigs, down six from the previous week and the miscellaneous rig remained at one.

Of the 851 rigs, 827 are land drilling rigs, down four from the previous week, 22 offshore drilling rigs, down two, and two inland waters drilling rigs, up one.

The number of drilling rigs increased the most by three to 423 ones in the state of Texas, while Pennsylvania lost the most with four to 28 ones.

Baker Hughes announced on Thursday that it officially changed its name from "Baker Hughes, a GE Company" to Baker Hughes Company.

Baker Hughes merged with GE Oil & Gas in July 2017 and was relaunched as Baker Hughes, a GE Company. In September, GE announced it had sold some of its shares in Baker Hughes, therefore losing its majority control of the company.

On Friday, its Class A common stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "BKR".
