Thailand to train inmates to become care givers to save medical costs

BANGKOK, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Thai Ministry of Public Health on Saturday told the media that it had rolled out new measures to teach and train inmates to become care givers to save medical costs.
The Public Health Ministry has joined hands with various agencies to offer training for selected inmates to look after their peers in the prison, said Sukhum Kanchanapimai, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Public Health.
"We will complete the guidelines for the selected inmates who will become care givers before the end of December this year," said Dr. Sukhum.
The permanent secretary also said a budget would be set aside to provide training for selected inmates to become care givers.
All prisoners in Thailand should have access to quality health services, which cover health promotion and disease prevention, said Dr. Sukhum.
Under the project, activities include HIV and syphilis screening tests for the prisoners before their release, mental health service, a breastfeeding and child development programs. Enditem
