KIEV, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian capital city is suffering from severe air pollution with its Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching the highest level of 180 points on Wednesday.

During the past several days, the whole country has seen higher levels of air pollution than before. Residents in Kiev and other cities shared photos and videos of their cities shrouded in smog on social media.

AQI is based on measurement of particulate matter, Ozone, Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulfur Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide emissions.

However, some officials of the capital argued that the growing pollution index was a result of "temperature inversion," which can trap air pollutants, such as smog, close to the ground. Enditem
