CHICAGO, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Zachary Horn, science teacher at Oswego High School in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago, smiled when he saw the five pieces of 1-kW installed outside the greenhouse of the school to convert solar energy into electricity.

This is the fourth year for Horn to be a science teacher at Oswego High School. "I love watching kids see science come to life around them outside the walls of Oswego High School," he said.

Standing in front of the five solar panels, Horn explained the work theory of solar panel to his students, letting them have first-hand knowledge of how sunlight is converted into electricity.

All the energy generated by the five solar panels will be used as power supply to the school.

According to Horn, science education of students in the United States runs through the whole process from kindergarten to the 12th Grade, and there is different scientific education for different grades of students.

"We have science class in the middle of every day in every school day," Horn told Xinhua.

Oswego High School got funding from the Solar Star Foundation to install the five solar panels.

The Solar Star Foundation, a non-profit organization established in July 2010, is an independent foundation initiated by members of Solar Star Club organized by a group of students to promote solar education.

The foundation launched a Small-Scale Solar PV Program for K-12 Schools in 2010 to introduce the energy future to students. It provides grants up to 1,000 dollars towards the cost of installing a new 1kW photovoltaic (PV) system to convert sunlight into electric power, as part of its effort to increase the use of solar energy through educating and working with younger generations.

The foundation has so far sponsored more than 30 schools to install solar panels in the U.S. Midwest state of Illinois. Wanxiang America Group is one of the sponsors of the foundation. Enditem
