DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's weather watchdog on Tuesday issued an alert calling for four regions in the Lake Victoria zone to brace for heavy rains expected this week.

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) issued its latest alert as reports indicated that ongoing rains in some other regions of Tanzania have killed at least 44 people by Sunday.

TMA said in its latest weather forecast that the rains were expected in west of Simiyu, Mara, Geita and Kagera regions that are located adjacent to Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and chief reservoir of the Nile River.

The forecast said the rains were expected to wreak havoc in the four regions, including destruction of infrastructure such as roads and bridges, submerging of houses, damaging farm crops and bringing to a standstill of some businesses.

On Monday, an official in Handeni district, one of the districts mostly affected by the rains, said the Tanzanian army will reconstruct bridges that have been washed away by ongoing rains.

Twaha Mgaya, the chairman of Handeni district council in Tanga region, said the Tanzania People's Defense Forces will reconstruct about four damaged bridges in the district which have been washed away by the rains.

Handeni, Korogwe and Muheza districts in the coastal region of Tanga have been seriously affected by the rains that have destroyed roads, bridges, houses and farm crops. Enditem
