Former Ugandan VP leads AU mission to observe Mauritius's upcoming elections

ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) on Tuesday disclosed that the former Ugandan Vice President, Speciosa Kazibwe Wandira, will lead the AU Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to Mauritius's Parliamentary Elections, slated for November 7.

Wandira, who is currently serving as the Chairperson of the AU Panel of the Wise and Co-chairperson of FemWise, is leading a 40-member AU short-term election observers' mission to Mauritius, which will stay in the Island nation from October 31 to November 12 as part of its election observation mission, the 55-member pan African bloc said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the AU, the deployment of an AUEOM to Mauritius "demonstrates the AU's commitment to supporting peaceful, democratic and credible electoral processes in its Member States by providing an objective assessment of the process."

It is also said to be in line with the AU's aspiration to ensure good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law on the continent.

"The conduct of peaceful, democratic and credible elections is widely recognized as being critical towards the achievement of Agenda 2063 and the AU's vision of an integrated, peaceful and prosperous African continent," the statement read.

The 40-member AUEOM is composed of ambassadors from the Permanent Representatives' Committee of the AU, parliamentarians from the Pan-African Parliament, election administrators, civil society, media and electoral experts, it was noted.

The AU also noted that its election observers' mission will release a statement on its preliminary findings and observations on the conduct of the elections few days after Mauritius's Parliamentary Elections. Enditem
