BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.50 percent, at 2,939.32 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.66 percent lower at 9,681.54 points.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia shares closed up 14.6 points, or 0.23 percent, to a level of 6,295.74 on Wednesday.

Some 518,407 transactions were booked, involving 17.4 billion copies of shares with a value of 9 trillion rupiah (about 641.7 million U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singaporean stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going up 0.34 percent, or 10.88 points, to close at 3,207.92.

A total of 1.06 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.14 billion Singapore dollars (about 744.33 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 200 to 190.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended mixed here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) rose 2.21 points, or 0.14 percent, to 1,580.00, but the Emas was at 11,194.02, down 5.60 points, or 0.05 percent.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 119.05 points, or 0.44 percent, to 26,667.71 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 26,602.95 and 26,809.53. Turnover totaled 75.28 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 9.60 billion U.S. dollars).

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's stocks finished lower on Wednesday, with the Cambodia Securities Exchange (CSX) Index down 3.01 points, or 0.38 percent, to close at 781.71.

Among the five trading stocks, the price of Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP), Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PWSA), and garment manufacturer Grand Twins International (GTI) dropped to 12,320 riel (3.04 dollars), 5,900 riel (1.45 dollars) and 4,440 riel (1.09 dollars), respectively.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) slipped 12.42 points, or 0.59 percent, to settle at 2,080.27. Trading volume stood at 411 million shares worth 5 trillion won (4.3 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index closed lower Wednesday, snapping a seven-day winning streak, as investors opted to lock in profits after the market's recent gains and ahead of the outcome of the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy setting meeting later in the day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 131.01 points, or 0.57 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 22,843.12.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market's indicator the S&P/NZX 50 index fell by 4.21 point or 0.04 percent to 10,789.54 on Wednesday.

Energy sector posted big loses with Contact down 2.22 percent, Genesis down 1.83 percent and Z Energy down 1.50 percent. Meridian Energy, which fell 1.06 percent to 4.65 NZ dollars, was the most traded stock of day, with a trading volume of 3.19 million.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market has closed sharply lower on Wednesday, with investors cautious ahead of a raft of domestic and international economic data due to be released in the coming days.

At the close of trade, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was down 55.90 points or 0.83 percent at 6,689.50, while the broader All Ordinaries index fell 53.80 points or 0.79 percent at 6,794.70. Enditem
