TRIPOLI, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Interior Ministry of the UN-backed Libyan government on Tuesday condemned shelling in southern Tripoli Monday that killed a child and injured two others.

"A clear violation of international laws, charters and treaties happened when indiscriminate shelling hit residential areas in the capital Tripoli by Haftar's militias (eastern-based army) that targeted Nukhba clinic in Al-Shok road in Tripoli, killing a 10-year-old child and setting three vehicles on fire," the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry demanded the UN Security Council and the international community to "take a firm decision to stop those criminal militias and put an end to the crimes committed against civilians, which threaten the security of Libya and the region".

A child was killed on Monday and two others were injured when shelling hit southern Tripoli, according to the Health Ministry's Field Medical Center.

The shelling also caused material damage to a nearby clinic, the center said on its official Facebook page.

The eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April against the UN-backed government, attempting to takeover the capital Tripoli and overthrow the UN-backed government.

The armed conflict has killed and injured thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians away from their homes. Enditem
