Inditex founder Amancio Ortega tops list of wealthiest Spaniards

MADRID, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Amancio Ortega, founder of the world's largest fashion retailer group Inditex, which includes the famous Zara brand, remains the richest person in Spain, details published by Forbes magazine and reported by the Spanish national TV network RTVE on Tuesday showed.

According to Forbes, Ortega's fortune grew to approximately 63 billion euros (70 billion U.S. dollars) in 2019 from 58 billion euros in 2018. The 83-year-old is worth as much as the next 43 people on the list of the 100 richest Spaniards.

Ortega's daughter, Sandra Ortega, is second on the list with a fortune estimated at around six billion euros. Rafael del Pino, chairman of construction company Ferrovial, is third with a fortune estimated at 4.1 billion euros.

Fourth on the list is Miguel Fluxa, chairman of Grupo Iberostar, one of Europe's largest hotel companies, with a fortune of around three billion euros, followed by Juan Roig, president of the Mercadona supermarket chain, who is worth around 2.7 billion euros.

Those top five are worth a total of 78.8 billion euros, which is more than the fortunes of the other 95 people on the list of the richest 100 people in Spain combined.

The combined wealth of the 100 biggest fortunes in Spain is now estimated at 148.2 billion euros - 1.5 billion euros more than in 2018.

Seventy-six of the 100 richest Spaniards are men. The only person on the list who does not exclusively dedicate himself to the world of business is the singer Julio Iglesias, who is 37th with an estimated fortune of 800 million euros. (one euro currently equals to 1.11 U.S. dollars) Enditem
