RABAT, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Morocco on Tuesday foiled an attempt to smuggle 13.2 tons of cannabis near the central city of Fes and arrested two people.

According to a statement by the Moroccan police on Wednesday, the banned substance was concealed inside big blocks of marble.

The smugglers used electrical equipment with high precision to puncture blocks of marble and hide the drugs, it said.

The operation took place in a farm 10 km from the city of Fes, and two people suspected of being part of this drug smuggling operation were arrested.

The statement said that the security service started a probe to check if a possible national or international criminal network was involved.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the last decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers, according to the United Nation's Office on Drugs and Crime. Enditem
