WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Department of State on Thursday designated Amadou Kouffa, a senior member of a West African terrorist group, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).
The State Department said in a statement that Kouffa, a senior member of Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), led an attack against the Malian army earlier this year, in which more than 20 soldiers were killed.
"Today's designation seeks to deny Kouffa the resources to plan and carry out terrorist attacks," the statement said.
All of his property and interests that were subject to U.S. jurisdiction would be blocked, and U.S. persons were generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with him.
JNIM is an al-Qaida affiliate active in the Sahel region of Africa. The terrorist group has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks and kidnappings since March 2017, killing more than 500 civilians, according to the statement. Enditem
