HAVANA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Thursday commended the international community's almost-unanimous support for ending the half-century trade embargo imposed by the United States on his country.

During a vote at the United Nations (UN) held on Wednesday, 187 member states voted for ending the embargo, which is called a blockade in Cuba, while Brazil and Israel joined the United States in voting no. Colombia and Ukraine abstained.

"Voices of the world united against the blockade on Cuba," Diaz-Canel announced on Twitter.

It is the 28th time the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba in the Cold War era.

"Like all nations, we get to choose which countries we trade with. This is our sovereign right," Kelly Craft, U.S. ambassador to the UN, said before the vote. Enditem
