COPENHAGEN, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- For the first time since records began, more people live on the island of Zealand than on the much larger peninsula of Jutland in the Nordic country of Denmark, showed the figures released by Statistics Denmark on Friday.

According to the figures, inhabitants in Zealand, east of Denmark, total more than 2,646,000, outnumbering the some 2,642,000 in Jutland, west of Denmark.

This change is attributed to a population increase of some 190,000 in the capital city of Copenhagen and surrounding municipalities located in Zealand over the past decade.

During the period, the inhabitants in the city of Copenhagen have grown by some 106,000. Denmark's total population is estimated at 5,827,463. Enditem
