CAIRO, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian ambassador to Egypt expressed appreciation of Egypt's efforts to reach a cease-fire between the Israelis and the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and halt the recent Israeli deadly raids on the enclave, the Palestinian embassy in Cairo said in a statement on Thursday.

Palestinian Ambassador Diab al-Louh "thanked Egypt for its efforts to stop the Israeli brutal aggression against the Palestinians in Gaza and valued the Egyptian position on the causes of the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights," according to the statement.

Since Tuesday, the Israeli raids on Gaza left at least 34 dead and more than 100 wounded, while the dozens of rockets fired by Palestinian militant movement Islamic Jihad at southern and central Israel caused no fatalities, but wounded at least three people.

The escalation started after Islamic Jihad senior commander Baha Abu al-Atta and his wife were killed by a pair of Israeli airstrikes on his home on Tuesday.

Both sides announced on Thursday the implementation of the reached cease-fire.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Musab al-Braim told reporters on Thursday that "the cease-fire agreement started to come into effect this morning through Egyptian mediation."

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict started more than 70 years ago following the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the Western-backed creation of Israel in 1948.

Egypt repeatedly voiced support for the UN-sposnored two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital based on the pre-1967 war borders. Enditem
