HONG KONG -- In a fresh bout of violence on Sunday rioters set a Hong Kong police vehicle on fire with petrol bombs and attacked two police officers with arrow and metal ball outside the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in Kowloon.

The police armored vehicle was attacked with petrol bombs hurled by the rioters who had blocked traffic at a major sea crossing tunnel, and TV footage showed fire engulfed the front side of the vehicle on a flyover near the PolyU. (Hong Kong-Violence)

COLOMBO -- Sri Lanka's Elections Chief Mahinda Deshapriya on Sunday afternoon confirmed that opposition candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the presidential elections.

Addressing the media shortly after releasing the final results, Deshapriya said Rajapaksa gained a higher percentage of votes than his opponents in the presidential polls, which concluded on Saturday. (Sri Lanka-Election)

MINSK -- Belarus kicked off voting to choose members of the lower house of parliament on Sunday.

MAHMUD-E-RAQI, Afghanistan -- Eight people including seven civilians were injured as a rickshaw bomb exploded in the bazaar of Tagab district of Afghanistan's eastern Kapisa province on Sunday, provincial police spokesman said.

"A mine planted by terrorists on a rickshaw was detonated in the bazaar of Tagab district today, wounding seven civilians and a police constable," police spokesman Abdul Shaeq Shurash told Xinhua. (Afghanistan-Bomb) Enditem
