ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government on Sunday disclosed the arrest of five Brazilian nationals in connection with an alleged attempt to smuggle about 47.4 kg of cocaine to different countries via Ethiopia.

The reported 47.4-kg of cocaine was seized at the East African country's main international hub at the Bole International Airport in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa on Saturday, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported Sunday.

The five Brazilian nationals, four of whom were said to be women, were caught as they were trying to smuggle the illegal drug to different countries via the Bole International Airport carrying through hand bags, FBC reported.

While three of the suspects were en route from Brazil's GRU International Airport to the Rwandan capital, Kigali via Addis Ababa, the remaining two were heading from GRU International Airport to Johannesburg, South Africa and Bangkok, the capital of Thailand via Addis Ababa, it was noted.

An Ethiopian court had previously sentenced a Nigerian national, who was caught hiding cocaine in his stomach, to seven years in prison in similar smuggling attempt. Enditem
