LOS ANGELES, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- American singer Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo, led nominations for the 62nd annual Grammy Awards with a whopping eight nods, the Recording Academy announced on Wednesday.

Lizzo, 31, was nominated across top categories, including "Truth Hurts" for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, "Cuz I Love You" for Album of the Year, and Best New Artist.

"This has been an incredible year for music and I'm just so thankful to even be part of it," Lizzo tweeted after nominations were announced.

Two young singers, 17-year-old Billie Eilish, whose full name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell, and 20-year-old Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, followed Lizzo in the race with six nominations each.

Other notable nominees include Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.

The 62nd Grammy Awards nominees were selected from more than 20,000 submissions across 84 categories and the eligibility window is for projects released between Oct. 1, 2018 and Aug. 31, 2019. As the only peer-selected music award, the Grammy Awards are voted on by the Recording Academy's membership body of music makers, who represent all genres and creative disciplines, including recording artists, songwriters, producers, mixers and engineers.

"This year's nominees reflect a melting pot of artistic innovation that defined the year in music, showcasing the unparalleled craftsmanship of established artists and the industry-shifting impact of rising music creators," said the Recording Academy in a statement, noting that leading nominees Lizzo, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X not only topped the charts but ignited a cultural conversation around their genre-bending hits.

"I am in complete awe of the inspiring nominees who have poured their hearts and souls into their craft, and in turn, have provided fans worldwide a year of music that changed us, stirred our emotions and inspired us to do more," said Recording Academy President and CEO Deborah Dugan.

"Today's announcement reflects a new era for the Recording Academy -- an army of engaged members that welcomes diversity, embraces creativity and champions young musicians on the rise," Dugan added.

The final round of the awards voting is between Dec. 9, 2019 and Jan. 3, 2020 and the awards will be presented on Jan. 26, 2020 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Enditem
