DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Embassy in Tanzania has awarded 80 Tanzanian students for their outstanding performance.

Speaking at the award giving ceremony at the Chinese embassy in the commercial capital on Friday evening, the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Wang Ke pledged China's continued support to Tanzania toward the development of education.

"I hope the awards will encourage as many students as possible to learn Chinese language and obtain scholarships given by the Chinese government to learn Chinese in China in future," she said.

Wang added that she hoped that Tanzanian students who have studied in China return to their country upon completion of their studies to help build the country and cement the friendship between the two countries.

She said this year the Chinese government offered scholarships to 302 Tanzanian students in various disciplines, adding that in total China has offered Tanzania about 1,900 scholarships.

The Chinese envoy said Chinese language is being taught at various education institutions in the country.

Wang said 80 Chinese language teachers were currently teaching Chinese language to 17,700 Tanzanians in various universities and schools across the country.

William Tate Ole Nasha, the Deputy Minister for Education, Science and Technology, said the Chinese language training was very important for mutual understanding between China and Tanzania.

"Learning Chinese language was akin to opening the window to global opportunities because China is a world leader in technology and economy," said Nasha.

He said since China was the leading foreign investor in Tanzania, it provided employment opportunities that favored people who speak Chinese language.

The two countries have continued to cooperate in many fields, including education and culture, health, agriculture, information, communication and technology, trade, tourism, energy and infrastructure, he said.

The Chinese Ambassador Awards was established in 2018 to recognize academic accomplishments. Enditem
