ABUJA -- Two people were killed and 23 others severely burned in a gas explosion in Nigeria's southwestern state of Lagos on Thursday.

Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, head of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, said the tragedy took place in the densely-populated Ajegunle area close to the Lagos Island when a gas cylinder leaked and exploded. (Nigeria-Gas Explosion-Death)

TALUQAN, Afghanistan -- A total of 17 people including seven soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack on a military base in the beleaguered Darqad district in the northern Takhar province on Thursday, said the local police.

"A group of Taliban rebels stormed the national army base in Qara Tepa area of Darqad district at 02:00 a.m. local time today triggering gun battle which lasted for a while, leaving 10 insurgents and seven soldiers dead," said Abdul Khalil Asir, spokesman of the Takhar police, adding that 11 other soldiers were wounded. SEOUL -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired two unidentified projectiles into the East Sea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Thursday.

The JCS said in a statement that the projectiles were launched from the DPRK's eastern province of South Hamgyong towards the eastern waters around 4:59 p.m. local time (0759 GMT).

It was quoted by Yonhap news agency as saying the projectiles, presumed to have been fired from a super-large multiple rocket launcher, traveled about 380 km at a maximum altitude of some 97 km. (SKorea-DPRK-Projectile)

MANILA -- Two people were killed, including a police officer, and 10 others injured after an unidentified man hurled a fragmentation grenade in a college campus in southern Philippines before noon on Thursday, local police said.
