Kenya start road to 2023 Cricket World Cup with Oman's Challenge League

NAIROBI, Dec. 2 (Xinhua)-- Kenya will join five other countries for the inaugural International Cricket Council (ICC) men's Cricket World Cup Challenge League B in Muscat, Oman.
The tournament, which has been moved from Hong Kong to Muscat, will now run from Dec 3-12 with six countries taking part in.
Bermuda, Hong Kong SAR (China), Italy, Jersey, Kenya, and Uganda are in Oman to play in the first of three Challenge League B events on the Road to India 2023, with 15 matches taking place in the 10-day event.
Kenya will be out to reinvest their dream of a return to the World Cup since their last show in 2011.
However, the team performed dismally in last month's ICC Twenty20 World Cup qualifiers in Dubai.
Cricket Kenya has made changes in the management of the team axing head coach Maurice Odumbe and bringing in Wynnand De Ridder from South Africa. Captain Shem Obado was replaced by Irfan Karim.
"Our preparations were not good and that is why we performed badly in Dubai. However, we took a lot of positives from the game and will hope to do well in Oman. So the matches against UAE have acted as training for the team," said Karim on Monday.
"The men's CWC Challenge League B is one of three events over the next two and half years that these teams will compete in, with the aim of qualifying for the 2023 ICC men's Cricket World Cup. I would like to thank Oman Cricket for stepping in to host this important event and I look forward to seeing a competitive, exciting competition in December," ICC Head of Events, Chris Tetley said.
The men's Cricket World Cup Challenge Leagues form part of the road to the ICC men's Cricket World Cup in India in 2023.
The top team in each Challenge League at the culmination of the competition will secure two of the six places in the men's ICC Cricket World Cup qualifier play-off to be held in 2022, alongside the bottom four teams from the men's CWC League 2.
The top two teams from the play-off will keep their hopes alive of participating in India 2023 by qualifying for the men's ICC CWC qualifier 2022. Enditem
