COLOMBO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa issued a special gazette notice on Monday night, declaring that he had prorogued the parliament for one month.

The gazette notice said the president had prorogued the parliament from midnight Monday and fixed Jan. 3, 2020 for the commencement of the next session of the parliament.

Local media reported that President Rajapaksa is expected to address the parliament when it opens for a new session on Jan. 3, during which he will outline his new government's policies.

Rajapaksa was elected as the new president of Sri Lanka after he won the Nov. 16 presidential election, defeating 34 other candidates who contested for the presidency. Enditem
