BANGKOK, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Thai Transport Ministry on Wednesday has announced several road safety measures during the coming New Year holiday from December 26 to January 9.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob also said that his officials will be on the watch-out to supervise traffic and ensure road safety during the holiday season.

Saksayam said several measures implemented include providing additional rounds of public transport services and exempt highway tolls to ensure traffic flows.

However the minister said traffic police will be deployed countrywide to breath-test drivers for alcohol impairment.

About 16 million people would be traveling while 8.6 million vehicles will be on the road during the New Year holiday, said Saksayam.

The main objective is to bring down the number of road accidents this holiday season.

The death toll of 2018 year end was recorded at 463, a 9.5 percent rise from 2017 year end's death toll of 423, according to Thailand's Road Safety Operation Center. Enditem
