KAMPALA, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Foreign teams have arrived in Uganda ahead of the 2019 Council for East and Central African Football Association (CECAFA) Senior Challenge Cup slated for Dec. 7-19 in Kampala.
Nicholas Musonye, secretary general of the CECAFA told Xinhua on Thursday that they expect a very competitive tournament this year since most teams have greatly improved.
Teams from Burundi, Somalia, Djibouti, Tanzania and Zanzibar have already arrived.
Musonye said although initially 12 teams had entered the competition after South Sudan, Ethiopia and the guest side Democratic Republic of Congo pulled out.
Musonye said he is happy that some teams like Tanzania and Somalia have included some professional players on their squads because this will bring more competitiveness.
Jonathan McKinstry, Uganda's coach told Xinhua that the response by his players is positive ahead of the tournament.
"We need to make sure that we take each game as it comes because it's a two-week long event. We are also using the tournament to prepare for the 2020 Africa Nations Championship," he said.
Hosts Uganda are pooled in Group A alongside Burundi, Eritrea, Somalia and Djibouti, while Group B has Tanzania, Sudan, Zanzibar and defending champions Kenya. Enditem
